Why you may need a certified birth certificate

A certified copy is the document most agencies accept as proof of identity, age, citizenship and parentage. These are the most common reasons people request one.

Driver's license or state ID

DMV offices generally require a certified birth certificate as primary proof of identity, legal name and date of birth — including for a REAL ID.

U.S. passport

A certified copy showing your full name, date and place of birth and both parents' names is the standard proof of citizenship for a passport application.

Employment and I-9 verification

Employers may accept a certified birth certificate, together with a photo ID, to confirm your identity and authorization to work.

School and sports enrollment

Schools, daycares, and youth leagues commonly ask for a birth certificate to verify a child's age, name and guardianship.

Social Security and military service

Used when applying for a Social Security card, correcting SSA records, or enlisting in the armed forces.

Government benefits and taxes

Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, disability, veterans' benefits and dependent claims often require proof of age and identity.

Marriage license and family matters

County clerks may require it for a marriage license, and courts may require it for custody, adoption or child support cases.

Insurance, medical and retirement

Health insurance enrollment, life insurance claims, pension and 401(k) or retirement paperwork frequently ask for proof of birth.

Banking, housing and travel

Opening certain accounts, signing a lease or mortgage, and cruise or border travel documentation can all require a certified copy.

Immigration, name change and estates

Citizenship and green card filings, dual citizenship, legal name changes, genealogy research and probate or inheritance claims.

Requirements vary by agency and by state. The organization requesting the document decides whether a certified copy is acceptable for a particular purpose.

How VitalCheck USA Works

We are a private assistance service. We do not issue vital records and we cannot guarantee that a government office will approve any request.

  1. 01

    You complete our online form.

It takes about 5–10 minutes. All service fees are shown before you pay.

  2. 02

    We review your information.

Our team reviews your application for completeness and lets you know if the issuing office requires additional documents or identification.

  3. 03

Your request is submitted to the issuing office.

We prepare and submit your request to the vital records office that holds the record. Only that government office can decide whether to issue a certificate.

  4. 04

The issuing office mails your certificate.

Certificates are printed and mailed by the government office. Processing and delivery times are set by that office and are outside our control.

Your data stays protected

Information you share is encrypted in transit and used only to prepare and submit your request.
